The Logan Village teenager is going from strength to strength

The Logan Village teen said the win in the fourth round of the competition had been "a long time coming", and his race had almost gone off without a hitch.

"It was good," Joshua said.

"This was the first actual podium finish in the side by side...This was a long time coming."

Side by side racing involves driving purpose-built off-road buggy over dirt, gravel and sand which frequently causes mechanical problems, and the young driver has encountered more than his fair share.

Joshua said he had made some changes to his driving style for this race, a move which resulted in him finishing almost 2 minutes ahead of his nearest rival.

"It was all about finishing," he said.

"We had a couple of heater laps - fast laps - and then knocked it down a bit and just tried to finish a couple more laps rather than just go crazy.

"In the races before I was just trying to go flat-out the whole time. I had quick laps but then I'd break, they're pretty pointless if you don't finish."

Joshua said with him and several other competitors driving several laps over a relatively short course, road conditions deteriorated to the point that they were worse than those he faced during the Finke Desert Race.

While this could be countered by easing off the gas a little, the young driver said he had another issue to contend with.

"For two whole laps I had no power steering," Joshua said.

"It was really sketchy, it would be no power steering and then you get a little bit and then it would actually lock on.

"If I came out of a corner and slid it, it would actually lock on and the car would spin back the other way because I couldn't steer it back. I had to really rip it...it would be all over the place. We did lose a lot of time from all that."

Not only did he walk away from the race with a hefty trophy, Joshua said the weekend had been an invaluable learning experience.

"The whole season I've just been trying to prove I'm faster than most of the people I'm racing against," he said.

"The good thing about that weekend is I know that if I pace myself it actually pays off."

Joshua's next race is scheduled for September 2-4 in Rainbow, Victoria.
