Logan Water has partnered with Gold Coast-based Mass Products to distribute a new safety device

The device, a lockout box for water valves, prevents accidents involving stored energy being released during repairs as it completely blocks access to in-ground valves.

The release of stored energy can lead to trench collapses, which have taken lives overseas.

It can also prevent people tampering with valves that have been opened to backfeed properties, ensuring customers have uninterrupted access to water.

The valve lock was developed by Logan Water and its partner Downer as part of a review of the organisations' lockout-tagout procedures and has received the Australian Water Association's Water Industry Safety Excellence Award.

Infrastructure Chair Councillor Teresa Lane said the simple device would go a long way to making the water industry safer.

"This is our way of making the Australian water industry safer for workers," Cr Lane said.

"This economical device provides operators with confidence that hazardous stored energy is controlled while repairs and maintenance are carried out on a water network.

"In addition to its safety aspect there'll be benefits from fewer network isolations that can disrupt supply and lead to lost productivity."

Logan City Council has relinquished all intellectual property rights to the device, to ensure the device is distributed and used widely.

A deal has also been reached with Gold Coast company Mass Products, to manufacture and sell the device online.
